What a dismal scene.

It doesn't seem like many people die in Ince. Maybe I should have stayed there instead of moving to Canada

Are they removing tombstones from the cemetery, or just tidying it up?

It reminds me of the film "Scrooge" where Alastair Simm follows the final spirit and sees the name "Ebenezer Scrooge" on the gravestone. That gravestone actually exists in a graveyard in Shrewsbury!

I lived my life upon the dole
And now i’m lying in this hole
Next door to me lies a real “Go-getter”
For all his toil he fared no better

The only reward that any of us get.

It could be that the grassy areas are where the paupers graves are. I discovered that when I looked for graves in my ancestry. The tombstones stick out like sore thumbs in the middle.

Seems to smack of elf & safety, wonky headstones etc....all cleared perhaps. Yes, a dismal sight.

I think this is actually Wigan Cemetery - at the bottom of Cemetery Lane, Lower Ince. Ince Cemetery is the one on Warrington Road, alongside Cemetery Road. They are separated by the West Coast Main Line. Also in the area, on the same side as Wigan Cemetery is Westwood Cemetery - started in the 1950s by Ince UDC, but taken over by Wigan MBC in the 1974 Local Government reorganisation - Wigan BC having itself begun burials at Gidlow Cemetery in the 1950s.
So, Derek - what with Wigan Crematorium also being in the Wigan Cemetery Chapel, Ince sees so many dead bodies it's known as the 'dead centre' of Wigan.

Only for the grass it could be boot hill

Always, always been confusion over those two cemeteries. Then Westwood cemetery came into being making for more confusion as all three are located in Lower Ince. Probably a slip of typing but I'm sure there is no Cemetery Lane.

Show respect.

Thank goodness someone has corrected the fact that this isn't Ince in Makerfield Cemetery.

Comment by: irene roberts on 2nd July 2019 at 08:56

Agreed, Neil. Drives me potty! xx
