This is a very unusual and interesting photo. I am a Beech Hill Lad who now lives in Houston, Texas. I was unfortunately laid off a couple of weeks ago if there are any Wigginors who feel my plight please implore me

Hello Ian.. Sorry about your job situation.. it's happening all over, even here in Fl... apart from low level service jobs.. Hope things work out for you soon...

Hi Ian , D Trump is not a politician, he is a businessman. He is not bothered about global warming , murders in Saudia Arabia , only business. I can’t see how you will have trouble finding a job in a place like yours .
Houston Texas , is not Beech Hill . Spare a thought to the 50 thousand miners who were cast out with the ‘there you go then’ lads , the world is your oyster ? We have a gap here bigger than your Grand Canyon, it’s called
the gap between the North and the South , which has always got wider from day one . I’m sure Donald Duck , sorry Trump will be there for you . Unlike what happened to the men and women in the Nothern Towns , who basically were told to get on your bike . Did he say that NT . And , that attitude still exists to this day . We have a thing here Ian called the Northern Powerhouse, have you heard about it ? Last mentioned by a chap named Michael Heseltine . Sorry Mick

Hi Maureen no I am not related to Gordon Buckley. However interestingly enough I grew up in one of the Police houses at the bottom of Beech Hill Lane and lived there for for 21 years.

Comment by: Maureen on 15th February 2019 at 22:05

Hello Ian,we had a friend that lived in one of those houses..he was a Policeman..and his name was Roy Williams.

It's quite possible that Ian may not remember Michael Heseltine,..but I do,...and if I'm being perfectly honest, I don't remember him in the context of ' The Northern Powerhouse' . In fact, in my rapidly failing memory, I seem to recall that this wealthy businessman turned politician played a crucial role in closing down Parkside colliery in the mid 80s, this in spite of a ( not oft reported ) high court judgement ruling that he had acted illegally. Tarzan being Tarzan however, forged ahead anyway, and now, as we are all perfectly aware, the colliery at Parkside no longer exists. So wealth and power it seems, would appear to be inextricably linked, and as for the rest of us, the proletariat , all that remains for us lot is the option of turning out to vote for the least evil of the several evils on offer.... Quelle chance?
I hesitate to mention the term ' Brexit ' at this juncture, although I've heard rumours that the DFS sale may possibly have ended before this farcical bunfight has been brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
Now some may say that pit closures were a good thing. After all, the combustion of fossil fuels and the subsequent release of toxic material into the atmosphere cannot be accecptable surely?
Ok, I can't argue with that, but how about a government that grants licences to the likes of Cuadrilla and other such capitalist outfits to frack for shale gas?
Or wait, maybe shale gas isn't a fossil fuel, yeah, that's probably where I'm going wrong.

Now here's an idea....why don't we throw thousands of miners onto the scrap heap and replace them with a few hundred roustabouts? Well, it seems to make economic sense to me, and I'm only a wagon driver, so I'm reasonably confident that the prodigy of Oxbridge, Marlborough and Eton, such as Tarzan and his ilk, have long seen the argument in this logic.

Are you Jimmy Buckley's son? If so, I am his cousin

Comment by: britboy on 15th February 2019 at 23:02

Ian ... I’ve lived in the USA for nearly 20yrs, I fortunately retired 6yrs ago.
I feel your pain, there’s only low paid jobs about now, certainly none that can support a family, especially the minimum wage jobs, some have two or three different jobs to make ends meet.
The one side that effected me was my company pension went down 43% because of the devaluing dollar so it effects everyone.
One things for sure, the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer.
The best of luck in your future endeavors.

Is that “Northern Powerhouse” what they are going to use to provide the electricity for the still unfinished Preston to Manchester electrification? Yet another stunning achievement for Chris Grayling to set alongside his most recent masterpiece, namely, his contract for ferry’s with a company that had no ferry’s?
Roll on brexit, we’ll show the world how it’s done!

Comment by: Mick on 16th February 2019 at 07:09

Im Jimmy Buckley uncle.

Comment by: Veronica on 16th February 2019 at 07:55

Do you two soothsayers reckon I shouldn't book my holiday abroad this year? It sounds like we are walking blindfolded over the Cliffs of Dover...

Comment by: DTease on 16th February 2019 at 12:28

By all means go abroad Veronica, just make sure you don’t book a ticket on a Chris Grayling ferry!
