Aww that is so sad! :(

Comment by: Ken R on 16th February 2016 at 01:34

Looks kind of sinister, this should not happen.

well it just shows how much rain there has been and you can't do anything about that. I have walked on the old part of the cemetery and it felt like I was going to sink because the ground was so soft. I love this place

For the sake of clarity - and after many years of having folk knocking on my former vicarage door at St Mary's asking where the Crematorium is - this is in Wigan Cemetery, Lower Ince, and the Crematorium is housed in a former chapel in the grounds. This Cemetery is at the bottom of Cemetery Road, off Warrington Road.
So not to be confused with Ince Cemetery, Lower Ince, which is straight off Warrington Road - but Cemetery Road runs along its souther edge.
Nor to be confused with Wigan Cemetery at Westwood, which is on Westwood Lane, off Warrington Road.
I'm not sure who could stop this happening, Ken R - given the rain we've had, the low-lying ground, and a liability to subsidence thereabouts.

25th August 2014 PAD shows the gates of what I knew as Wigan cemetery bottom of Cemetery road. The caption read Ince cemetery. I queried this and was informed by the photographer it had been renamed Lower Ince cemetery and Wigan crematorium.
Confusion will continue to reign more than ever.

As Rev David says, there isn't too much that can be done to stop this happening. It certainly wont bother the interred, and, looking at the apparent age of the headstones they wont be receiving many grieving relatives. Ken R, can i suggest you have a word with Rev Davids 'boss' to see what he can do.
That aside, we are missing two regular contributors to P-a-D, firstly, Giovanni,(Maureen & Irene) what have you done with him ? Secondly, Rachel Shallcross whos photos were regularly on here, the last one being Christmas Eve, she has either changed her name to Danny Staff or eloped to Italy with Giovanni.

Hi folks
I'm back using my real name.
Salutations aside, this pic of the cemetery is dreadful. I know the tombstones are old and I cant imagine anyone paying respects but for heavens sake Council get this mess sorted!!

Comment by: Roy on 16th February 2016 at 14:17

Than you Ernest, i didn't get as far down the comments as that bit of information.

Comment by: Linda on 16th February 2016 at 14:18

You are correct, Anne. The cemetery and crematorium were re-named. Its now known as: Lower Ince Cemetery and Wigan Crematorium.
I've no idea as to why the change was made.

I don't mean to be disrespectful but it does put into perspective the saying 'they would turn in their graves'!! I always said I wanted to be buried -but looking at this awful mess -I think I will change my mind.and choose cremation! (not for some while though I hope) Also most of us have grandparents and grt grandparents and ancestors without headstones in this Cemetry . It is very sad to see this.

how sad

Comment by: MarieM on 16th February 2016 at 20:08

I am sure there would be some volunteers who would look after it .
