On many war memorials is the inscription "The Blood of Heroes is The Seed of Freedom" When I first saw this on the memorial at Ormskirk when I was quite young,I felt very moved, and it still resonates with me to this day.

Congratulations, Tom, on becoming a Member of the Order of the British Empire. Nice to see that Wigan, Lancashire, even though it is in brackets, is beside your name on the
official list.
All the best to you and everyone on and connected with Wigan World.
Mick, not far off your NZ trip - wish I was going!

Tom, Peter and I went to The Somme years ago, and saw the rows of little white headstones in the well-cared-for cemeteries, some of lads as young as seventeen, but the saddest ones were of the unidentified young soldiers, bearing the words "A Soldier of The Great War, Known Unto God". Like you, I have never forgotten it.
