Nice one, Brian.

George Orwell would never recognise it today.

Was Shearing's once part of Taylor's Mill?

First time I went down this street was in the 60s and I was a member of the Wigan AFS and we attended a big factory fire.

It was raining an big Amy the Wigan bobby was also on duty and she said to me come over here love and shelter in this door way with her.

I`ve been on many Shearings holidays - 91 to be exact.
Mick and Dougie pull one another`s legs on Forum.
Mick; Your video of Cockington Village doesn`t show the 12th century church.
Dougie; Re your comment yesterday on Cockington Village: on a Shearings tour in June 2007, several of us were taken in a mini-bus from Tor Park hotel, Torquay to Cockington Village. So I think coaches aren`t allowed.
Was Middleton and Wood, in Wallgate, opposite Miry Lane? Have looked at photo #10637, end of 2nd row on page 1 in Album, Street scenes, Wallgate.

My great aunt Annie kept a pub on Miry Lane in the 1920s, possibly the Crown. Moved away to Worksop to run a workingmen's club

Mick , was big Amy famous , notorious , or both?

Comment by: Aubrey on 27th June 2015 at 19:16

Julie,
Amy Holt was a policewoman in Wigan. She was over 6 feet tall and was a well liked police officer. I think her maiden name was Dooley, a family of large built men and women, she was related to Wayne Dooley the ex Blackpool police officer and international rugby player. Amy was big and had a really big heart, she always carried sweets in her pocket that she handed out to all and sundry.

Julie, Aubrey as said it all, only other thing I can mention is that she is buried in Parbold church yard the one on the hill and on her grave it says Amy Isobel Holt ex WPC No 1

Thanks Aubrey.

Big Amy lived not too far from me..
whenever she got on the bus she would help all the old folk on and off the bus..
A story circulated around Wallgate was when a particular man that was continually drunk was overheard saying as he was put into the police
van"I don't care what you do with me,just don't let big Amy get hold of me".

Comment by: Broady on 28th June 2015 at 05:30

I think she used to patrol round the pitch at Central Park.

Comment by: Aubrey on 28th June 2015 at 06:31

Sorry, I now think it was Wade Dooley, not Wayne..
