Police Station
Police Station   by Thomas Walsh  (Canon PowerShot A1200)
The old police station, Harrogate Street, Wigan.

I've been away for a few days so I missed some pics. However yesterdays was magnificent, thank you so much. Then we have todays monstrocity, it could have been used for the youth zone instead of taking green space from your town. However small.

I used to work there, top floor CID Office, many memories, both good and bad. 3rd floor had a fully functioning bar too.

Comment by kath Pressey on 20th August 2013 at 06:29
definitely a carbuncle. what was the architect thinking!?

Comment by Garry on 20th August 2013 at 06:55
That police station was ideal there, and next to the court...what could be easier.

Comment by Helen on 20th August 2013 at 08:43
I think the architect must have visited Norwich & seen the Norman castle...mind you the castle is far more easy on the eye than this big, grey box.

Comment by A.W. on 20th August 2013 at 09:43
You're right Derek, it is a monstrosity, the standard Lancashire Constabulary Police Station from the late 60s and 70s. I agree with you about the Youth Zone, I think the empty Marketgate Centre could have been used for that.

Comment by Colin Harlow on 20th August 2013 at 11:07
You don't need to look far away to see another architect monstrosity, only bigger, the Life Centre...(that's my opinion).

Comment by Maureen on 20th August 2013 at 13:39
What a big difference in this and yesterdays court building..this one has no character at all.

Comment by Jean F (Wales) on 20th August 2013 at 21:37
Horrible......did anyone ever see daylight ??

Comment by Roberto on 20th August 2013 at 21:50
At least it is now being renovated, it should look ok with the new hotel cladding.

Comment by Ellen on 21st August 2013 at 00:51
Words fail me! This doesn't look like Wigan to me!

Comment by Garry on 21st August 2013 at 06:11
Lets hope it's not going to be another fast food outlet...I think Wigan have enough of that rubbish.

Comment by Henry on 24th August 2013 at 17:40
It (and its peers) were built that way in case of bomb attacks. Hard to believe? Its true. The IRA were very active in that era.

Comment by Art on 25th August 2013 at 01:15
40 years old & scrapped. Forward planning?

Comment by Henry on 26th August 2013 at 19:48
I'm with you on that one, Garry. Too many fast food outlets and I'm sick of getting flyers through the letterbox from such outlets.

Comment by Rocket on 7th September 2013 at 23:50
Full of asbestos!
