Cat I'th'Window

Cat I'th'Window
The plaque reads:

"Originally a farmhouse with a fine thatched roof, it was burned down in 1901 and later rebuilt. Tradition says that the silhouette cats in the blank windows are successors of the plaster cats originally used in the old days of the early catholic persecution to indicate that a Mass was to be held in nearby Standish Hall, or to warn Catholics that government troops were in the area. Alternatively, they may have been a dairyman's sign."

A nice clear photo & interesting notes....I can remember passing this house quite a few times when I was a child...I used to look out for it. I recall it was then a browny, pebbledashed building but the cats were always black.

Love this house and the story that goes with it. Glad to see that this story is being kept alive.

Used to pass this in the 60s - is it Almond Brook Road?

Comment by: Pauline Speirs on 13th July 2011 at 19:48

Oh I hate cats they are dirty filthy animals, I have to clean up my garden every morning when they've use it as a toilet. I have a lovely garden but these dirty things try to ruin it, it's not fair.

Cats here, no problem, got a gun. City law no cats roam.

Did they paint over the windows.

Comment by: Hugh Wilson on 14th July 2011 at 02:27

Well that was a conversation stopper if ever I saw one!! Well done Joe.

Comment by: Lee on 14th July 2011 at 07:35

I'm with Joe - I hate the things. No loyalty, no love. Give me a dog any day. Man's true best friend!

People wi cats dont bother wi their gardens, so the not bothered about thee and other nice gardens. owners should be made to clean it up like they do wi dogs poo.

Comment by: Roy on 14th July 2011 at 19:38

At least cats don't bark

Comment by: Ince man on 14th July 2011 at 21:47

Roy likes cats...wow wow wuff wuff.

Comment by: Les on 16th July 2011 at 09:43

Cats make more noise than dogs... You don't see dogs roaming the streets at night screeming. Don't forget about cats killing our lovely birds. Dogs are much better.

Comment by: Duncan on 16th July 2011 at 10:27

don't see what the fuss is about dogs, birds, cats, humans all drop their muck someplace. Try walking round any town on a Saturday night/Sunday morning, you will see plenty human muck. All carnivorous creatures kill something else to eat, why pick on cats?

Comment by: Roy on 16th July 2011 at 12:32

Dogs bark any time of the day, never heard of a cat taking a chunk out of someone's arm or leg.

Comment by: FRANK on 16th July 2011 at 12:58

THEY DO AND WILL SCRATCH YOUR EYES OUT AS WELL, DOGS MUCH BETTER ANIMALS TO KEEP.

YES DUNCAN YOU ARE RIGHT, BUT THE COUNCIL CLEANS IT UP THE DAY AFTER.

AS FOR CATS I HATE UM, THEY DESTROY MY GARDEN.

Comment by: James on 16th July 2011 at 14:28

Why are dog lovers so intolerant of other creatures, they are not animal lovers.

Comment by: Joe on 16th July 2011 at 15:40

I don't have a dog or cat, but do have a nice garden and cats use it for their toilet, it digs up the soil to hide its poo and throws it over my lovely cared for lawns most nights. thats why I hate cats.

Comment by: Duncan on 18th July 2011 at 10:12

Frank, ask the council if they are willing to clean out the muck in your garden!

Comment by: DJB on 18th July 2011 at 23:20

For pity's sake, grow up. I'm not a cat lover myself but they have to go somewhere, as do all creatures. maybe if all garden lovers were to get rid of cats, they could then moan about moles, mice, rats, and birds that eat their seeds. The only real pests on this planet walk on two legs. Oh and by the way, when did you last hear of a cat savaging somebody to death

Comment by: Kelly on 19th July 2011 at 16:42

Don't tar all cats with the same brush please. I have 5 that live indoors so don't poo in anyones garden!

Comment by: Len on 25th July 2011 at 18:17
