From the JJB website:
JJB was originally formed in 1971 to acquire the business of a single sports store in Wigan. The original store was established by JJ Broughton in the early 1900s and was then bought by JJ Braddock and then JJ Bradburn. When David Whelan bought the store from John Bradburn he maintained the JJB name. Trading from four stores in 1976, the store portfolio grew to 120 stores in 1994, at which point the Company was floated on the London Stock Exchange.

I remember JJ Broughton's shop - it was at the bottom of Market street, on the corner.

JJB Sports fortunes have declined since Dave Whelan sold his major shareholding. He saved them from bankruptcy by buying their fitness centres and some stores and re branding them as DW Sports.
JJB Sports chased the (increasingly congested) discount / fashion market and DW Sports is aimed more at the quality market

Aw, we were just getting used to JJB stadium too. Why don't they call it after the locality, such as Scot Lane stadium or Robin Park Stadium or Wigan Latics Stadium or summat.??

Comment by: pat copple on 6th August 2009 at 15:54

CENTRAL PARK!!!!!!!

Comment by: Frank Healy on 6th August 2009 at 21:02

Comment by: The Caretaker on 24th August 2009 at 11:57

I agree with Dave on the poor re branding of the former JJB Stadium after the sale of Valencia and Co you think "Big DW" would have coughed up for at least a new sign and a more original name. Instead of nipping down to Wallpaper Supplies for a cheap tin of black paint and some naff 1980's esque stickers.
