I Have cycled under this bridge(viaduct) many times on my way to work (Wrightington Hospital). I was told a story about the bridge, that in the 70's a wagon carrying Guiness fell off the M6 and the canal was full of bottles, the whole of Shevington was awash with beer. hahah. The driver and Co-driver escaped unhurt.

There are six "ways" crossing here.

Motorway - Canal - Towpath - Railway - River Douglas - Public Bridleway

Don't forget a 7th - the main tranatlantic air route passes over this area. On many a clear morning you can see planes on their approach into Manchester Airport. I can't think of any other area where so mnay modes of transport intersect each other
