|Town’s New Restaurant is a Breath of Fresh Air
Council environmental health chiefs have welcomed news that a new Wigan restaurant opening this week is to be smoke free.
Smoking will be banned throughout Gallimore’s restaurant in the Wiend, which opened its doors for the first time on June 28th. It joins a small but growing band of totally smoke free food premises in Wigan, such as The Scene, Café Select, and the Beta Net Café.
Welcoming the news, the council’s director of community protection Bob Saunders said he was sure proprietor Howard Gallimore’s smoke free policy would attract diners to the new restaurant. Mr Saunders added:
“Many towns and cities around the world now require people not to smoke in enclosed places. One year into smoke freedom in Southern Ireland most customers, publicans and restaurateurs say they wouldn’t want to return to the smokey days.”
“Smoke free enclosed places means that all workers, even bar and restaurant staff can work in a smoke free atmosphere.”
“While local authorities across the north west are now looking at the possibility of going smoke free, enterprising restaurateurs are already taking matters into their own hands and asking customers to stub out before they step in.”
While many places now provide non-smoking areas, fewer have yet to ban smoking totally. With smokers in a minority of the population as a whole, Wigan Council says it is keen to see more diners having a choice of totally smoke free venues.
