|Let’s Hear It ‘Fore’ Sue! Recycling Produces Paper Tigers
Join Our Club: Susan Halpin of the council’s green team hands Susan Anderton her prize while nephews Jamie and Marcus show off their new clubs.
Move over Tiger Woods because there’s a couple of new cubs on the block ready for golfing glory… and it’s all thanks to recycling!
Susan Anderton of Holmwood Close, Ashton, has been a keen supporter of the council’s paper recycling scheme.
Susan’s hard work was rewarded recently when she was picked as the latest winner of the ‘sack race’ recycling competition.
She’s been supporting the fortnightly collection of paper since the kerbside service began more than a year ago and has now won £500 in prize money for her efforts.
And her young sports mad nephews Jamie, age seven and Marcus, three, are the first to benefit - with a new set of golf clubs.
The cash is a thank-you from the government-backed Waste & Resource Action Programme (WRAP) and is awarded monthly to a participating household after names are drawn out of the hat by the mayor.
Green team member Ruth Halpin, who presented the award, said:
“Congratulations everyone for recycling. It’s plain to see that you’ve all gone a ‘fairway’ to doing your bit for the environment.”
“We want all residents to keep giving us old paper. The competition runs throughout the summer, and any paper not sent to landfill saves resources, trees and money.”
While winner Susan said:
“This is a real treat for us all. We’ll keep recycling and will tell our neighbours to join in and maybe win some cash for themselves!”
Residents can learn more about recycling in Wigan borough online or at a series of exhibitions starting at Asda Wigan at 2pm on Wednesday May 25th.
