Grand Arcade Archaeology Open Day
Wednesday 11th May, 2005

The public are invited to attend an open day at the Grand Arcade site in Wigan on Saturday 14th May to view the remains found during recent archaeological work. A sequence of remains have been uncovered, which date from Roman, Medieval and later periods.

The Roman remains found in Wigan are particularly significant, as these provide the first detailed evidence of the nature of the Roman occupation of Wigan. Little is know about Roman Wigan, although it has been associated with the settlement known from Roman literature as Coccium.

The team from Oxford Archaeology North will guide the public through the findings, with information boards available showing the history of the site and interpretations of the remains. The public will also have a chance to view some of the excavated material.

Date: Saturday 14th May 2005

Time: 11-3pm

Location: Access to the dig site is at the entrance off Millgate
