|Latics promotion would be "brilliant" for Wigan - mayor
A Latics match and Mayor of Wigan Cllr John Hilton
Wigan mayor Cllr John Hilton is backing Wigan Athletic to win the coveted second automatic promotion place to the Premier League this Sunday.
Cllr Hilton said that Premiership football next season would give the whole borough a lift. He said: "If as we all hope Latics go up then the impact on Wigan would be absolutely brilliant.
"You only have to look at Bolton to realise what it can do for a town's image and confidence - not to mention the effect on tourism and business. Likewise you can see how desperate places like Norwich and Southampton are to retain top flight soccer for another season.
"Having all those famous premier clubs like Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal, United and Chelsea playing at the JJB would really put the spotlight on the town. It would be great to see all the youngsters swapping their current shirts for Wigan ones."
Cllr Hilton has football in his blood - in the 1920s his father was a professional soccer player for Wigan Borough FC, the forerunner to Wigan Athletic, and went on to join Everton before a knee injury ended his soccer career.
The mayor added: "On behalf of the Council as a whole I offer my wholehearted backing to Wigan Athletic. Whatever happens this weekend they can hold their heads up high after such a fantastic season.
"It doesn't matter if you're a fan of football, rugby league or rugby union - this is about Wigan and pride in the town, and I hope everyone will get behind the lads on Sunday."
