A man who died following an assault in Scholes has been formally identified
Friday 29th April, 2005

The 41-year-old man who died after he was assaulted in the Scholes area of Wigan on Saturday 23 April 2005, has been formally identified as Mi Gao HUANG CHEN, from Towcester Close in the Ancoats area of Manchester.

Mi, locally known as 'Michael,' suffered serious head injuries during a disturbance at approximately 11.30pm on Hardy Butts at the junction of Wellington Street.

He was taken to hospital where he died yesterday evening, Thursday 28 April 2005.

A further fourth teenagers have been arrested this morning, Friday 29 April 2005 on suspicion of murder and are currently being questioned by detectives.

They include a 14-year-old boy from Scholes, a 14-year-old girl from Ince, a 15-year-old boy from Scholes and a 15-year-old girl from Wigan.

It is believed Mi Gao became involved in an altercation with a group of youths moments before the incident took place.

A number of weapons are believed to have been used in the attack, including piping, wooden planks, a garden spade and hoe.

A total of nineteen youths have now been arrested. Fifteen teenagers have already been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and Section 18 assault. They have all been released on police bail until 20 June 2005.

The teenagers on bail include:
A 14-year-old girl from Ashton-in-Makerfield
A 15-year-old boy from Higher Ince
A 16-year-old boy from Aspull
A 16-year-old boy from Ince
An 18-year-old boy from Lower Ince
Three 16-year-old girls from Wigan
Two 15-year-old boys from Ince
A 15-year-old boy from Whelley
A 16-year-old boy from Higher Ince
A 14-year-old boy from Scholes
A 17-year-old girl from Lower Ince
A 17-year-old boy from Ince
