|Appeal for information following the death of a 41-year-old man in Scholes
A 41-year-old man from Manchester has died in hospital after he was assaulted in the Scholes area of Wigan on Saturday 23 April 2005.
The man suffered serious head injuries during a disturbance at approximately 11.30pm on Hardy Butts at the junction of Wellington Street.
The man, from the Ancoats area of Manchester, was taken to hospital where he died on Thursday evening, 28 April 2005.
It is believed the man, who is yet to be formally identified, became involved in an altercation with a group of youths moments before the incident took place.
A number of weapons are believed to have been used in the attack, including piping, wooden planks, a garden spade and hoe.
Almost a week after the assault, police are continuing to appeal for further information to help catch those responsible for the attack.
Detectives will be in the Scholes Precinct area Friday night and Saturday night, continuing their enquiries and asking local residents for further information about the incident.
A mobile police unit will be located in the area over the weekend. People can visit officers at this unit and pass on further information.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve CRIMMINS, leading the investigation said: "The 41-year-old victim died in hospital yesterday evening and this has now become a murder investigation. We continue to robustly investigate the incident and I would advise anyone who has any further information about the events of Saturday night to come forward and contact us as it is essential we find the people responsible for this attack."
"The mobile police unit will be located near to the Scholes Precinct over the weekend and detectives will be in the area tonight and tomorrow night to ask local residents and people in the area if they have any further details about the incident. We hope that having officers in the area a week on from the attack will help to jog people's memories and to come forward with the information."
"Police in Wigan work extremely closely with the local community and recently we have become aware of groups of youths coming into the Scholes area to cause a nuisance. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and the attack last weekend is unacceptable."
"Over the past few months, an on-going operation has been running to crackdown on youth nuisance. This has included increased police patrols in the Scholes area, with additional Community Beat Officers, and high visibility policing to help reassure the community and disrupt any criminal activity."
Anyone with further information about the incident is asked to contact police at the Incident Room at Wigan Police Station on 0161 856 1536/7 or Crimetoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
