Mayfair To Mesnes Park? Wigan Wants To ‘Pass Go’ in Monopoly Comp
Capital Idea: Mayor of Wigan Cllr John Hilton takes his hat off to the idea of a Wigan-themed Monopoly board.

Get out and vote!

That’s the message from Mayor of Wigan Cllr John Hilton this week as he urges residents to use their democratic right to make our borough a winner.

But this is no party political broadcast because the mayor is encouraging everyone to help the borough achieve board game immortality with its very own version of Monopoly.

The makers of the world-famous board game want to make a new version but instead of the familiar London street and place names they want to use a North Western town.

The organisers have asked the public to vote for their favourite town in a three-horse-race between Wigan, Preston and Bolton.

At the last count Wigan and Bolton were neck and neck with 37 per cent of the votes each, with Preston trailing on 24 per cent.

If Wigan wins we could see the Pier instead of Park Lane, King Street instead of Kings Cross and Market Place for Marlboro Street.

The result of the votes will be announced to coincide with the General Election on Thursday May 5th.

The competition has been organised by UK-based games innovators Winning Moves and you can vote for Wigan by visiting their website at www.winningmoves.co.uk

Mayor, Cllr Hilton said there really was only one choice:

“From George Formby to George Orwell and from the Rugby League to the Wigan International Jazz Festival, Wigan really does have a global reputation.

“We have a great many things to be proud of in this borough and having our own Monopoly board would be a fitting tribute to what our town has to offer.”

He added:

“I for one will be voting for my home town and I would urge everyone to do likewise. It takes less than a minute to do so get on that mouse and click for Wigan!”

Other great Wigan landmarks past and present that could make it to the Monopoly board include:

  • Pennington Flash
  • Haigh Hall
  • Wigan Casino
  • Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls
  • Turnpike Gallery
  • Three Sisters
  • JJB Stadium
  • Leigh Sports Village

More than 7,000 people have already voted and you can add your name to that list by visiting www.winningmoves.co.uk and voting for Wigan.
