Wigan Council has granted its first licence under the new Licensing Act.
The Act has seen the responsibility for alcohol licensing pass from magistrates courts to local authorities and all current licence holders must apply to transfer their existing liquor licences to the council.
Richard Best of the Litten Tree in King Street, Wigan, is now the holder of Personal Licence ‘0001’, which authorises him in any licensed premises in the country. Mr Best is pictured with Cllr Terry Halliwell (centre), Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Licensing & Lifestyle, and Senior Licensing Officer Peter Hibbert (left).
Last week, licensing chiefs voiced concerns that a flood of last minute applications for the transfer of licences could swamp them. The government has given people who held a licence before 7th February 2005 until 6th August to submit applications — but so far only a handful have done so. Now people are being urged to submit their applications as a matter of urgency.
