Flippin' Good News for Robin Park

Wigan isn’t just a hot–bed for football action – it is quickly becoming the North West’s capital of sport! Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust is celebrating following the official confirmation that Robin Park Sports Centre and Arena is to host the British Men’s Gymnastics Championships in 2006 and 2007.

Following on from the success of the 2005 event, which saw record numbers attend, British Gymnastics had no hesitation in deciding that Wigan was the place to stage their number one competition for the next two years.

“We have formed an excellent relationship with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and the feedback from officials, gymnasts and spectators was unanimous, the venue at Robin Park is fantastic,” says Competition Director for British Gymnastics, Ben Murphy. “We are delighted that we have agreed to continue holding the event in Wigan for the foreseeable future.”

One of the major successes of 2005, was the link forged with local schools to provide a special taster session on the Friday before the event.

“On the day before the British Championships, two hundred pupils from all over the borough attended the taster session, which was facilitated by the gymnasts and coaches taking part in the event,” says Mike Lea, Gymnastics Development Officer for the trust. “It was a fantastic opportunity for children to be coached by the best in Britain and you could see the excitement on the faces of all the children involved. There is no doubt that this is something we will look to repeat at the 2006 Championships.”

Another major factor in the successful turn out for last years event was the ‘kids go free’ initiative that was introduced by the Robin Park for the event. Centre Manager, Mike Woodruff was delighted with its success, “One of the reasons to have this type of event, is to raise awareness of the sport within the area. We have the extra incentive of watching the best gymnasts in the country free of charge and were always confident of a great response. That is exactly what we got in 2005 and we hope to build on that over the next two years.”

As with last year’s event, Robin Park will host the Seniors, Under-18’s, Under-14’s and a new category, the Under 12’s, so there are likely to be London 2012 future medalists taking part.

The competition will take place at Robin Park Arena Sports Centre on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th November 2006, with the school children’s taster day taking place on Friday 3rd.

British Gymnastics has a number of sponsorship and advertising possibilities available for these championships. Anyone wishing to become involved with this prestigious and exciting competition can contact Ben Murphy at British Gymnastics on 020 7890 9580.
