Helping to ‘Move More Often’ - A Celebration
Monday 23rd January, 2006

Hundreds of elderly residents in Wigan Borough are feeling the benefits of a more active lifestyle thanks to the introduction of a little gentle exercise into their lives. The Moving More Often initiative has seen over 85 care staff receive training from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Active Living team, meaning care staff can now deliver gentle exercise courses at residential care homes across the borough.

The scheme trains care workers within residential homes, care settings and groups to deliver a variety of physical activities including ‘Games People Play’, ‘On My Own’, ‘Walk With Me’ and ‘Out and About’. All of the successful participants are gathering on Tuesday 24th January at Robin Park Arena, to recognise the success of the course and to officially receive their certificates.

“The aim of Moving More Often is to get elderly residents of care homes to partake in some gentle exercise that will help improve their mobility, balance and ailments such as arthritis,” says Alison Griffin from the trust’s Active Living team. “The trust’s Getting Wigan Active vision is about making sure everyone can become more healthy, not just people who are fit enough to swim or go to the gym. A little exercise can make a great deal of difference to people’s lives.”

“The carers now have new practical skills and ideas to take back and deliver in their particular settings and the feedback we get from staff is excellent and we thank Wigan Council’s Social Services for their support in this project,” continues Alison. “After their training ends, all of the carers are well supported and have regular contact with the Active Living Team for any future developments and ideas.“
