Council chiefs in Wigan have welcomed a trade delegation from China which has been visiting the borough to look at investment opportunities.
Recently council leader Peter Smith met the Chinese Consul General, Gong Jianzhong, at a reception in Manchester, and through him invited a delegation to look at the investment potential of the borough
Mr Gong accepted the invitation and a ten-strong delegation has been in town for the past few days to learn more about the borough and explore future investment opportunities.
Lord Smith said: "China is set to become one of the world's most important economies. Wigan and the wider region, with its large Chinese community, is clearly seen as an opportunity, and we are as keen as the Chinese are to establish good business relationships.
"Recent world-wide publicity thanks to the success of Wigan Athletic has raised the borough's profile, and we will do everything we can to build on that and promote Wigan as an international business location."
The delegation has looked at potential development sites and premises and was given a town hall reception by the mayor.
Director of Planning and Regeneration Martin Kimber said: "It was a pleasure to welcome the Chinese party, and they were very interested in what we had to show them.
"We will continue to keep in contact and promote the attractions of our borough to an international audience."
