|Parson's Walk car park opens
A new temporary car park in Parson's Walk, created on part of the Mesnes Field in Wigan, is now open to members of the public on Saturdays.
The 178 space car park will be pay and display, and is expected to relieve some of the pressure on existing car parks in the run up to Christmas. Many town centre retailers rely on Christmas trade for a substantial part of their annual turnover.
Like other surface car parks in the town centre, it will also be available free after 6pm and on Sundays.
A council spokesman said: "In parking terms this is a welcome addition to the facilities available in Wigan, especially in the weeks before Christmas.
"The Saturdays in December are probably the busiest shopping days in the year, and these spaces will help to ease the burden on the existing car parks in the town. There are now 150 empty spaces on Mesnes Terrace multi-storey available for the public to use as a result of transferring council staff.
"Throughout the year they will provide a convenient weekend alternative when the car parks are at their busiest."
The Parson's Walk car park also includes 12 dedicate parking spaces for disabled motorists. It has been constructed out of road 'planings' but with bitmac parking bays.
Council chiefs have confirmed that the field WILL be restored and improved once the Grand Arcade opens in spring 2007.
