Hospice Walk Raises Funds and Health Awareness
Best Foot Forward: Members of the Active Living Team and Wigan & Leigh Hospice stride out.

With Christmas nearly upon us and waistlines across the borough getting set to expand, volunteers from Wigan and Leigh have been sending out a healthy message whilst raising money for one of the boroughís most important charities.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trustís Active Living team has teamed up with Wigan and Leigh Hospice to organise a series of sponsored health walks during September. To date the walks have raised over £11,000 (this year) with sponsor money still flooding in.

Over 300 people from across the community took part in the Wigan and Leigh Hospice Walk For A Life which included guided health walks around the Three Sisters Recreation Area (6km) and Pennington Flash (9km). This is the third year of the walks and the amount raised over the last three years is well over £40,000.

"We were delighted to help the hospice raise this money Health Walks are ideal for people who want to improve their general health and well-being and can easily be built into your everyday routine," says Judith Kershaw from the Trustís Active Living team. "To obtain health benefits from walking, you only need to walk for 30 minutes, five days a week. If it suits the walks can be broken down to three, ten minute walking sessions per day."

"We are very grateful for the support given by The Active Living Team, Park Rangers, Councilís Engineering Department, Red Rose Forrest and the Forrestry Commission, without whom the event would be very difficult to organise and run. Partnerships of this kind are invaluable to the whole community," says Alan Baron, Corporate Services Director of the Hospice. "The Hospice recommends healthy exercise and supports the sterling work of the Active Living Team who provide a valuable service to people in our community. We would also like to thank the hundreds of local people who gave us their support."

The Active Living Team provides weekly guided Health Walks (1 to 2 hour) across the Wigan Borough. They are suitable for people of all ages and are a fun way to take up walking in a safe and sociable atmosphere. The walks are a good way to enjoy your local area and meet new people and are completely free. Contact the Active Living Team on either (Leigh) 01942 886802 or (Wigan) 01942 828572.
