|Congratulations — You’ve Got The Sack!
Bags By Demand: Council recycling expert Karen Sutcliffe presents Sack Race winner Alison Muddiman with her prize.
Success is in the bag for Atherton's Alison Muddiman after she became the latest winner of the council's Sack Race recycling competition.
The Lovers Lane resident is the 12th monthly winner of the Sack Race competition which rewards eco-friendly households with the chance to win some top prizes.
Alison netted a cool £500 in shopping vouchers and a sack of eco-friendly goodies after her name was the first drawn out as part of the monthly prize draw.
Alison is already a keen recycler thanks to a trip down under. In Australia all households must separate recyclable materials at home and the habit has stuck with Alison.
"We take our bottles and cans back to the supermarket and put them in the recycling banks on the car park before buying new things," she says.
But it's for saving her catalogues and papers that Alison and partner John have been rewarded. Paper can be a quarter of most bins and the council can collect it and have it recycled so it's back on the news-stands within a fortnight.
Council recycling expert Karen Sutcliffe, who presented Alison with her prize, said: "Well done to Alison and thanks to everyone who has joined the Sack Race.
"Putting your sack out every two weeks saves money, trees and stops useful materials being sent to landfill."
The prize money is from the government's Waste and Resource Action Programme, and the monthly winner is drawn at random by the Mayor of Wigan from participating households.
Alison was thrilled with her £500 windfall. "It's a lovely gift," she said. "I'm off to tell the neighbours to get their paper sacks out for a chance of winning…and then I'm going shopping!"
