How to beat the bogeymen
Wednesday 26th October, 2005

Wigan Council's consumer champions have joined forces with B&Q to highlight the problems of bogus callers and dodgy doorstep salesmen.

The DIY giants have agreed to host a display and presentation at their Wigan store's OAP discount day on Wednesday 2nd November.

The council's trading standards officers will be showing a specially made video called "Beat the Bogeyman" and providing leaflets and information on how older and vulnerable residents can protect themselves in the home and community.

The consumer experts will give out information and answer questions at sessions in the demonstration area, beginning at 10 am and on the hour until 4pm.

Chief trading standards officer Alan Blundell said: "Everyone can come along for tea and biscuits, to watch the video and pick up advice leaflets on their rights when buying on the doorstep. We'll also have information about cons to look out for, and how to stop unwanted telephone sales calls, silent calls and direct mailing."

Victim Support is also attending, and will bring along various items that can help people feel safer in their own home.

The event has been organised as part of National Consumer Week (31st October -4th November).
