Appeal for information following two burglaries - following which an 89yr old woman died
Saturday 15th October, 2005

An investigation is underway following the death of an 89-year-old woman from Chapel Close in Lower Ince.

Barbara WORKMAN died at the Wigan Royal Infirmary on Friday 7 October 2005 at around 9.00pm. A post mortem examination revealed that the woman died from bleeding inside of her skull.

Earlier that day officers received two reports of burglaries at homes on Chapel Close. It is believed they were committed at some time between 9pm on Thursday 6 October and 8am on Friday 7 October 2005.

At the first house one or more offenders (the exact number is not known) entered Barbara's home through the back kitchen door and stole cash.

At the second address it is believed that two offenders entered through a window at the back of the house. An 82-year-old woman disturbed the offenders and they left. She later discovered money had been stolen from her handbag.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Crimmins said, "At this stage we cannot confirm whether the death of the 89-year-old woman is linked directly to the burglary but the Home Office pathologist will be conducting further tests to try and establish this.

"Our thoughts are with Barbara's family and friends at this very sad time but we would like to reassure them, and members of the local community, that we are doing everything possible to try and catch those responsible for the burglaries. We would urge anyone who may have any information regarding either burglary to contact Wigan CID on 0161 856 7252 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
