|What Rhymes with Wigan?
Wigan Library is looking for poets and poetry lovers from across the borough to join its new Poetry Group.
The group, which will meet monthly in the Gallery at Wigan Library, is a chance for everyone who loves poetry to get together and share old favourites and explore new and unfamiliar verse.
Members could be poets reading their own work, or readers who want to share the poetry that has inspired them, impressed them, or made them laugh.
Stephen Lythgoe, Wigan Libraries' Reader in Residence, says: “Poetry Groups are great fun, a chance to share your delight in language with others and to hear poems you maybe wouldn't have come across otherwise. Everyone gets a chance to contribute, and you could meet new friends. "
As part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s vision Getting Wigan Active, Wigan’s Library services are continually looking to provide opportunities for people to become more active in their community and be mentally stimulated.
“The continued popularity of the Words Literary Festival has shown that there is a real appetite for literature and poetry in particular in the Wigan Borough,” continues Stephen. “We want to harness that thirst for language and have some fun at the same time.”
The first meeting of the new group will take place between 4.30 and 6.00pm on Thursday, 27th October.
Poetry enthusiasts should bring along a few favourite poems and feel free to share their ideas about how the group can grow and develop. Everyone is welcome, and refreshments will be provided.
