Man assaulted during attempted robbery of car
Tuesday 16th August, 2005

An 18-year-old Bolton man is recovering after he was seriously assaulted when two men attempted to steal his car at traffic lights in Wigan on Sunday night, 14 August 2005.

At around 9:55pm on Sunday night the 18-year-old was driving his white M-registered Citreon AX through the Worsley Mesnes area towards Wigan town centre. As he stopped at traffic lights at the junction of Chapel Lane and Caroline Street he became aware of a new style, khaki-green-coloured Renault Clio behind him.

Two men then jumped out of the Clio and one of them attempted to open the passenger door of the Citreon, which was locked. The second man managed to open the driver's door, shouting that he wanted the car and telling the 18-year-old to get out. He then repeatedly punched him in the face, causing a haematoma above his right eye and severe cuts and bruising to his face. Fortunately the victim managed to slam his car door shut and drove off. He then contacted the emergency services and was taken to Wigan Royal Infirmary for treatment to his injuries.

During the assault the victim saw a Clio drive past the scene. Detectives are keen to trace the occupants of the Clio as they could hold important information about the incident.

The victim believes that there were three occupants in the Clio. The driver was a woman who was aged around 19-years-old and had blonde hair with black streaks through it. One of the men has been described as white, around 25-years-old with short, light brown hair. He was around 6' tall and was wearing blue, faded jeans and was wearing a white, collarless t-shirt. He had a thin, gold chain around his neck and spoke with a slightly Liverpudlian accent. The other man was white and is believed to be aged in his early 20's.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have any information about the offenders, is asked to contact CID at Leigh on 0161 856 7279 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
