Roman Dig, Millgate, 2005.

Millgate Dig

Shepherd Construction, in conjunction with Oxford Archaeology North carried out a dig on the Grand Arcade site, Millgate. It was paid for by developers Modus after the council made it a condition of planning permission.

Not a lot is known about Roman Wigan, although it is believed to be a settlement known from Roman literature as Coccium. The fascinating photos below strengthen this belief and lead archaeologist Ian Miller said: "In Roman terms Wigan has gone from the 4th division to the Premiership."

Latest dig, Millgate / Wiend, August 2008

Another excavation has taken place at Millgate / top of the Wiend prior to the new Wigan Baths being built on the site.

Material has been found from every century (except the 15th for some reason, plague?)
