Does anybody know if Dower House Farm, Platt Bridge was known as Dower Cottage Farm Lower Ince back in 1889? I have a record of my gt gt grandparents living there when they had their 3rd child 1889. Before that they lived at 1 Foggs Fold, Platt Bridge. Thanks |

Am looking for the LOWE family who lived at Gidlow House Wigan during WW1
Mother and father James and Katherine.
They had 7 children who were all alive in the 1911 census :- Lly, Arthur, George,Faulkner,Douglas, Harold and Veda,(known as Veedie.) James was a Draper in Wigan.
I would assume that there must be children of the children still about. Any information would be most welcome, |

Hello Wigan,
My Great Grandfather, John Withington emigrated to Dorchester Massachusetts USA and then New Haven Connecticut USA in the late 1800’s. With the help of Pat Rutter the Withington Family Historian, managed to trace our lineage back to 1640 in Wigan. I have now become fascinated with Wigan and would love to hear from anyone who is a possible relation. I am also curious as to how Withingon Lane got its name. Could it be where my ancestors lived? I plan a visit very soon.
Bye for now.
Tim Withington |

I have funeral cards dating back until the 1890s with the Queens arms mentioned. My great grandparents with the surname Tabern supposedly owned this pub so I was researching to see if this was true. |

My great grandfather worked at Windy Harbour Colliery, 1852, located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Found this site and thought, at first, it was in the US. Realized eventually it was in the UK. Evidently the US mine was developed by an immigrant from Wales and named the mine after his native area. My compliments on your site.I found it of interest that there was a "patch" / hamlet / townland in th mining area named Wigan and it was famous for involvement in the infamous Molly Maguire legends in the US. |

After reading some of your comments about accents, i had a look at your dialect list and although there are some words we don`t use in Derbyshire, there are common words and pronounciations we use. With all respect, I believe that what `Anon` wrote previously, regarding lazy, or inpropper ways of wording, became void `ears and `ears ago. Some people do write things how they sound to them, it`s life. Enjoy the wording, dialect will always be there. |

This site is brilliant! i find it fascinating. i am searching for a Miss Claire Moorfield (NEE) of, or formally of, Alma Grove, Marus Bridge. She will currently be around 30 years old. We lost contact in 1999/2000 when Claire was studying nursing at Birmingham. If anybody knows Claire, or Claire`s family, i would very much like to regain contact with her. 11 years is too long! thank you, Alec Nicholls. |
