must admit he was my first influence to music, with the looks and a voice like that and at the time not many white people in the USA sang that kind of music

His early days were his best, as John Lennon said, "Before Elvis there was nothing" he wasnt far off.

I last saw him in Tesco car park pushin trolleys up to top end of the cop,It was rainin heavy, I gave him a hand, we wheeled em up humming "Its now or never " great man.
same as always, the good die young.

I really can't stand his music.

Years ago I had a neighbour who was obsessed and used to play Elvis stuff for hours on end. I hated it to the extent I used to go out for long walks in the cold and rain, just to get away from it.

Awful! Sad

But, as Bloo says, each to their own.

Yes, I know what they are, bloo. I had a couple when I was a child. And, as you know, I'm very fond of the timeless Dylan and the amazing Byrds who've copied a lot of his songs. Very Happy

I still think Elvis is rubbish. Sorry. Confused

Well I was not a baby, and I am of the generation that grew up with him.B ut my dad was a HUGE fan of Elvis. He played them everyday, in the car, in the house.... he would be singing them as he worked in the garden.

I got so fed up of hearing them I cannot stand Elvis now. But, having said that he also played a lot of Johnny Cash everyday... him I DO still like!

The thing is... Elvis was the first 'superstar'... he was the model that a lot of others followed. But that does not alter the fact his music was commercial fluff. It had nothing to do with real 'thought ou't music. There was no message, no cutting edge... his music was just Love, Hearts and Flowers. I am not knocking that, it was as I say what sold... but 'out there'... nah! Elvis only ever recorded songs that his management knew was safe, that it would sell in large amounts. He never realaly took a risk on anything 'conceptual'... such as the Beatles.

Ask a few pop stars who influenced them they will often say Elvis, but ask hard core rockers and they will say, The Byrds, Led Zepp, Jefferson Airplane, Dylan... those that took risk with music and pushed the envelope.
