Hi there !

Laughing

I wonder if you can help?

I'm doing some research with regard to Wigan with a view to bettering the ongoing development efforts for the Grand Arcade.

Our organisation (a registered charity Think Tank, The New Economics Foundation) is gathering data related to the 'distinctiveness' of Wigan so that this information can be used to recommend how to improve the further developments planned.

The data collected will particularly help ensure that new developments and schemes fit in with and do not damage existing successes. For example, we're interested in which community activities are relevant to Wigan, how these can be made better available to locals (and tourists), how community organisations might be supported, what resources can be usefully developed or expanded, and so forth. (Importantly, the developers might well have some money in the pot from their ‘Community Heart Scheme’ to help make Wigan more community-like and hence successful, and we have found it most convincing to make recommendations based on the needs of the community as elicited from them directly.

That’s where you come in !

Our research shows that an improved sense of community and distinctiveness in a town results in improved success and prosperity generally.)

We have designed a short e-survey, and hope to collect valuable data so that this may be used in our recommendation report to the developers. We have limited resources, so I wonder if you would mind completing the survey? We would really like to collect as many responses as possible from the local community, and we fully expect that there will be money and support on the table for relevant town projects and community groups and activities. But we do need input to back up and evidence our recommendations.

I have included below a reference link so that you can see the survey in question. It's all fairly general and innocuous, but the data will be very useful to make a convincing case to the developers.

Brilliant if you share your views with us ! Have a rant, make it known what you think, tell us about the good things and the bad, tell us what is needed, tell us what needs changing. And we promise to feedback formally to the developers what you think along with recommendations to address the views gathered.

Have your say, and make a difference !

Look forward to receiving your views !

Kind regards,

The New Economics Foundation

Ah, wonderful responses so far !

Laughing

Really good that some of you are getting your teeth into this. Feel free to answer the questions more briefly if you don't have so much time. You can even answer only a few questions, and skip the remainder if you get bored. Rolling Eyes

The more responses the better for Wigan, though !

Arrow http://www.wigansurvey.com

Go on, share your views and make a difference !

Arrow What would you like to see? Question What would you like changed? What new resources would be relevant and valued in Wigan? Idea How do you like the Wigan Arcade? Exclamation What's wrong with it? Twisted Evil Any community activities you fancy being promoted? Laughing Community Groups supported? Wink

We'll do our best to make recommendations that are credible and supportive, so just send in your views about the town and what you like and dislike.

Thanks very much for sharing your views !

Smile

I would love to see Haigh Hall restored to its former glory its a crime the council have let it deteriorate so badly.
A decent swimming pool like Chorley have would be nice.
The market full to capacity reducing the rent would attract more of the little traders.
Anything that would take the gangs of teenagers off the streets at night.

Excellent!

There are some very interesting views coming in on the survey.

Thanks thanks thanks !

We do need more, though !!!

Laughing

What I can promise you, is that any point registered in the survey will not only be presented to the developers professionally and formally, but we will ourselves undertake a study as to whether those needs are feasible, and how they can be satisfied. And be ambitious if you like! Even if the developers can’t afford to undertake projects like the restoration of Haigh Hall, the developers might be interested in championing and supporting a local community campaign for its sponsorship and restoration? Our organisation shows time and time again that a united community can make things happen, from community restoration projects to addressing local crime and litter.

We do need a response quantity that indicates general needs, though. And the more survey responses, the more powerful will be our arguments!!!

So, please register your views about Wigan!

They’re all valid !

www.wigansurvey.com

If you think an organisation in Wigan are not doing their job properly, tell us that, too! Tell us what is working, also. We can help lobby the former, and look at developing the latter.

And if we are told that such points “have all been said before” and typically “fall on deaf ears”, then that’s useful too – because we can make associated and additional efforts to ensure that the points are actually heard this time.

That’s what we’ve been commissioned to do – so use us as a conduit, and send in your views via the survey. Make a difference, and be proud to be part of helping Wigan improve. Sounds a bit cliché? Too good to be true? Not at all ! Our organisation is specialised in this task, and moreover, the developers have themselves commission us specifically to do this. So please make use of this opportunity, sending the survey to your friends, colleagues, and family after your own completion.

Sincerely,

The New Economics Foundation

Ah, fantastic !

thank you, thank you, thank you

Laughing

very interesting responses, too ...

More of that, please please please. Looks very informative and constructive. Don't feel obliged to spend that amount of time on this, but wonderful that some of you have. Whatever you can offer will be much appreciated!!! Even one or two answers would be useful if you're short of time.

Great to see such an enthusiastic community!

sorry nef, but no ten mins will make a difference. It needs thinking about and brutal honesty. I also share concern that it will make absolutely NO difference whatsoever....mostly because it is too late. All Wigan's best little nooks and crannies are gone forever. There is nothing in the GA unique to Wigan I am afraid and precious little anywhere else.

I filled it in. if we continue to say "it won't do any good, no point in doing anything" then nothing will get done. shout loud enough and you will be heard.

Absolutely right !

And support may come in all shapes and sizes -- it may not just be raw cash, but 'support' that may comprise: use of marketing personnel and expertise to promote your local event; help with the formation of a new community campaign group; use of buildings for your community group; help in the organisation and management of your event; assistance with the lobbying of council / authorities for action; help in organising, promoting, and running a local competition or concert; and the list goes on !

The registered views to date are really useful, so thanks. But please do continue to pass on the survey to your friends and colleagues, and, if you haven't already completed the survey, then please do !

Thanks again,

We're still after more local views, so please do send them in:

www.wigansurvey.com

Sorry to sound like a nag, but your views really will make a difference.

We're keen to offer the developers some realistic propositions about support for local resources and communities, and steering them towards acting in response to the town's and borough's genuine needs.

Thanks again
