Good pictures, Mick. I chatted to a lock keeper earlier today and he told me C&RT staff were there first thing (7.30am) but couldn't fix the damage, so they're bringing the specialists in from Stanley Ferry near Wakefield.

It might be that in part, Mick. I'd hoped the notice on the door would be legible as it says:
"When this door is closed we are telephone service only Tel No. 01942 492222" (Branch Info)

Repair Notice updates: 22/08/2017 @ 17:02:
Please be advised that the Wigan Flight will be back open at 08:00 Wednesday 23rd August. To resume navigation quickly our staff will operate Lock 71 to oversee the movement of boats passing through the area. Further works are needed in order to effect a permanent repair to the lock, we are currently in discussions with our Heritage Team regarding this. Thank you for your patience.

I wonder what work will be involved to achieve the permanent repair.

The pound below Britannia Bridge was drained earlier today, I think due to a lock on the lower lock being broken.

JoAnne I wrote complaing to the Canal & River Trust about the state of the tow paths

Hi Mick

Thank you so much for getting in contact. Im sorry to hear there was an issue on our towpath. Would you be able to provide a bit more information for us, so that our Towpath Rangers can investigate this issue?

Date and time obstruction detected

Waterway affected

Location Grid Reference/Functional Location and a sufficiently detailed description so that it can be accurately located.

Are there photographs of the obstruction?

I look forward to hearing from you, and thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

Kind regards

Kate

Kate Owen

Hi Kate thanks for getting back to me so quick I didnt expect it.

The tow path from Ell meadow lock No 89 Martland mill Wigan, all the way to Buscough is in bad condition with deep ruts and over hanging trees.
I dont know if you ride a bike along the canal Kate but if your front tyre its the side of one of these ruts you loose control and end up being thrown off into the bushes or into the canal.
The low tree branches are also a problem with some cyclist not seeing them and hitting there heads on them.

I and many more canal users have mentioned this to the maintenance men when we see them but there response is oh we have no money for jobs like that, my response is they would so be fixed if they where anywhere near London.

Regards Mick

Dear Mick

I telephoned Ellie Meadow, 89 Martland Mill Lane, Wigan.
Here is her reply.

I am sorry to hear about the Bus having a cough and in bad condition, also that the deep roots from my trees have caused the man problems with his loose control and him having to go into the bushes or canal. I am getting our Terry to come to sort these roots out and trim the overhanging branches. I do so hope the psychiatrist is feeling a lot better after having banged his three heads on them. And no I don't have the money to spend on jobs like this, I can only fix our Terry with the price of a couple of drinks in his local for his trouble, I can't send him anywhere near London.

Yours truly
E. Meadow (Mrs)

So there you are Mick, hopefully this has answered your complaint.
Kind regards
Kate Owen

Ellie Meadow indeed, Cyril! Very Happy

Certainly worth making the CRT aware of your concerns, Mick. Let's hope they can be properly addressed.

From Better Towpaths for Everyone - A national policy for sharing towpaths:

Principles of towpath use
p.4) 8 Where there are concerns over towpath capacity or condition, we will seek opportunities to secure further external investment
