This photo is not so much about composition (although it has lines, shapes and texture enough) but the use a processing filter (in this case a Lomo-type filter available in several free photo processing programs) to produce an enhanced effect (requiring no great skill), which for me is reminiscent of old glossy magazine pictures.

A small splash of (contrasting) colour can add much needed interest and focus, as in this rather neutral scene of a dull early morning canal-side run.





A sunlit evening scene against a dark brooding sky, is usually popular. Almost everyone seems to like reflections.

Just as you can have a "colour splash" you can have a "content splash", something a little unusual in an otherwise usual scene.

Make an impact by filling the frame - otherwise known as "in your face". Adding border to a photo can sometimes help.
