Anybody doing a family tree? I am stuck trying to find out why my great grandad died as Samuel Arkwright, married as Samuel Arkwright but was not born as Samuel Arkwright. To add to the mystery, his brother, John Taberner was in attendance when Sam died! Any one have a clue what has happened?
Patricia.

He's mother could have remarried, and changed he's name, or him and he's brother could have been adopted by different families, how do you know he wasn't born an arkwright ?

There is no record of a Samuel Arkwright being born on 15th Jan 1846. However, that date is what is recorded on his marriage certificate. In parallel with that, is that a Samuel Taberner was born in 1846 and his brother, John Taberner, was born in 1855. Their parents were John Taberner/Tabberner b.1824 and Elizabeth ??? b. 1823. The family were living in Ashton Road, Pemberton according to the 1861 census but by the 1871 census, Samuel was not recorded as living there. If it is the same person, then he would have married on Ellen Lowton ( as an Arkwright!) on 9th Dec 1867 and moved out and started his own family. Clearly, I need to find the surname of Samuel Taberner's mum before she wed...that might hold some clues.

Result! Searching through the marriage registers of All Saints, Wigan for 1845, just as a guess really...found a John Tabiner got married to Elizabeth Arkwright on 15th Feb 1846......one month after Elizabeth had already given birth to Samuel......well, well.

Yes! This is my Sam Arkwright....thank you for finding his baptism record....which took place 14 days before Elizabeth (his Mum) married John Tabiner..... Wonder if John Tabiner was Sam's Dad ?
