History of Wigan (Help with ancient and recent history.)

Wyn means white in Welsh, which was spoken round here before English was...and still was by hundreds round Gillacre in the 20th Century.
'White stone' sounds more likely than 'joy stone' as the origin of a place or personal name. Just a suggestion...
