Hello danni, I think it may have come about because of mining subsidence like the flashes. I remember when I used to cut across there from Newtown to Poolstock in the sixties, there was a lot of evidence still around then of past mine workings such as old ventilation shafts and spoil heaps, it may also have got its name because of the red shale from those heaps.
