a) Wigan is nowhere near the 'largest component town' in the metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester named after it!

Wigan isn't as big as Pemberton. Even both of them put together and known as 'the former county borough of Wigan' aren't as big as Ashton in Makerfield.

b) Wigan borough doesn't lie 'directly to the west of the City of Salford' either.

It lies directly to the west of the 'metropolitan borough of the City of Salford'.

God Almighty! You just couldn't make it up, could you?
