It's not a balaclava in the every day sense. It's PPE (personal protective equipment) protects me from being identified. Especially when I'm doing "research".

"A simple pulley working up the passage" is not as straightforward as you may think paul. I'm not disclosing my full findings on here. Let's just say this:

My solution neither works-up the passage, nor does it work-up steam or any other pressure. The answer is vacuum.
