Perhaps, it is the open borders policy of the European Union with no border controls which includes no border patrols which is the root of the problem?

My Wife and I went on numerous coach holidays in Europe which involved crossing different borders and the only time we ever showed our passport was when we entered Switzerland (non EU state) and when we re-entered our country at the British Customs Passport Control at the seaports of Calais, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.
