Orrellite, I was in Bolton in the first couple of days of this scare and the bloke, of the house I was in, worked for United Utilities. He'd been doing 16 hour night shifts, digging up and replacing leaky valves which were under cattle fields in the Fylde area.
His wife said that his clothes stunk when he came home as he was digging and working in cow-piss sodden earth.

This tends to show that they knew what was causing it straight away.
