General (General discussion, talk about anything.)
We went to live on norley in 1950 , I would be about 6 or 7 . A lot of the houses were just being built at the top end. The building sights were a haven for us kids to play. Piles of sand and bricks to make dens. At the bottom of helvellyn rd there used to be a watchman with only one hand, and a hook where his hand should have been. He used to chase after us waving his hook at us if he caught us playing in the half built houses. I was terrified of him, I would run like hell across The Green as fast as my little fat legs would go.
To this day I get uneasy if I see a hooked hand. 33 years ago when I married my husband at Chorley registry office I nearly died when I saw that the registrar had a big hook instead of a hand.
