Winstanley

Does the name Winstanley have any meaning behind it other than some person in the council coming up with it?

dostaf When we were young we called it Winky Hall. The Bankes family, as said, sold a lot of their land for house building for the Winstanley Estate and now owned by Dorbcrest Homes. Most of the Bankes family now live in Cheshire.

When the fishing club at Island Dam, on the two mile stretch wanted to put a tarmac drive down to the lake, they had to get the permission of the Bankes family so they obviously still own land round there.

The hall appears to be in a bad state now, Marie.

dostaf I think there is a Group who are trying to restore it but I don't see why when Dorbcrest Homes own it. They were going to turn it into upmarket apartments but that seems to have fallen through.

dostaf If they pull that Hall down it will be criminal. Why are Dorbrest Homes not doing more.

I don't think Dorbcrest Hones 'own' Winstanley Hall. I reckon it's owned by Winstanley Hall Development Company Ltd, which is Tim Bankes.
Dorbcrest probably had an interest in the site, hoping their planning application to have been successful, but it wasn't.
They wouldn't buy themselves a liability. They would only proceed with purchase if the permission for development was given the go-ahead first.

Dorbcrest own Winstanley Hall but have access issues with Squire Bankes. The township of Winstanley gets its name from the Winstanley family.

i must send them some money because one day i might claim my rightful inheritance to that part of Wigan, and I'll need somewhere to live.

I know a few have mentioned the name belonging to the family and maybe i have missed something, but what i meant is does the word it self have a meaning.

People were often called after certain things they did many many moons ago Like Bob Baker because he was a baker Thomas Tanner because he worked with leather and such. Does "winstanley" have a meaning like these?

Wyn means white in Welsh, which was spoken round here before English was...and still was by hundreds round Gillacre in the 20th Century.
'White stone' sounds more likely than 'joy stone' as the origin of a place or personal name. Just a suggestion...

I AM a Winstanley and very proud of my name, and having just read what this awful council did in the 1960s defies belief , but then again not that much surprised what this stupid council gets up to,today it could have had people living there in luxurious flats and preserving the history of this town WIGAN.

Winstanley is NOT Wigan and vice versa. The history of the town of Wigan does not include Winstanley Hall.

'Win' in North of England (it is in the dictionary) historically, designates the place where you winnow.

ie grains, but also reed and peat are put out to dry, it is usually a hillside exposed to both Sun and Wind, often close to the mill (corn grinding, not cotton)
