From Old French demeine (later Anglo-Norman French demesne) 'belonging to a lord', from Latin dominicus, from dominus 'lord, master'.

Newton le Willows was a crown demesne and Wigan was a part of Newton le Willows. That's why the name 'mesnes' is used for sections of Newton le Willows and Wigan.
