The universal language that everybody understands....even if it is in a language we don't understand it still makes an impression.

Music has charms to soothe the savage breast.......If music be the food of love play on......I LOVE MUSIC......It lifts the spirits & feeds the soul.

I like most music except :-
Current pop & all pop since the eighties - non of your Arctic Chiefs & Kaiser Monkeys!!!.
Country & western.
Some jazz.
Hip hop, bip bop, flip flop.

I love classical especially descriptive pastoral like Vaughan Williams ' The Lark Ascending' or to make you melt into an armchair - Delius 'On hearing the first cuckoo in spring'.

I'm a real folkie, favourite band Steeleye Span - still going strong. Being Irish I love Irish bands Danu, Solas, The Chieftains & Horslips. Also like Fairport Convention & The Incredible String Band & Breton musician Alan Stivell.

Other bands from my era - The Strawbs, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd & saving the best till last The Beatles & Mike Oldfield.........I could go on..........but I won't.

Come on you Wigan Worlders pop your heads above the parapet, what are you musical passions - we won't judge or make fun......................I hope.

Well..we have music on nearly all the time..living room, kitchen,it's always been a passion in our house,we have every type..pop,rock,soul,classical..favourite composer being Edward Elgar..opera,my favourite being Puccini's La Boheme..but I cannot listen to it without crying..my brother took me to see it before he died with a brain tumour..Country and Western I love..especially Glen Campbell, love him..Irish bands,my youngest was in a heavy rock band (Marseilles)G.B a couple of years back,he played the lead bass guitar..eldest lad used to be a drummer...so as I say music plays a big part in our family.

Momac I'm sorry that a lovely piece of music should bring such sad memories. We have La Boheme & Madam Butterfly on CD. The aria 'One Fine Day' is just beautiful. Glad to see you've got actual musicianship in the family too - great
We have spanish, jumbo accoustic & electric guitars, mandolin & piano. I don't play guitar as much these days, being an old so and so, I've started to develope arthritis in my thumbs.

One of my favourites. The First Time Ever I saw your face. Reminds me of when I first saw my children and grandchildren.

Posted by: lizziedownunder (6330)  Report abuse
I was brought up listening to my Dad tinkering on the piano. and the music of.Enrico Caruso....Lois Armstrong.....The Rat Pack......all the war time favourites......my Mum had a great voice....the story is that she used to get behind the microphone at the Empress Ballroom.....

Posted by: MarieM (5094) Report abuse
Can anyone put a link on for The First Time ever I saw you face.

Posted by: raymyjamie (5260) Report abuse
The Rat Pack were Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & a few more drinking buddies I think were'nt they?

Posted by: BLACKRODWEAVER (521) Report abuse
Liz loved this group since first hearing them, to me the best female singer ever. Me and the wife are going to watch them in september in manchester. hope the link works.

ray and momac Thank you. I can't believe it is over 40 years old that song.

Posted by: momac (9156)  Report abuse
Lizzie,I thought Maria Callas had a beautiful voice..I read her biography and you wouldn't believe how big she used to be when she was younger..it all started when she saw a photo of Audrey Hepburn and vowed then to lose weight..I painted her portrait as well.Maria's I mean.

Posted by: MarieM (5094) Report abuse
momac Why don't you put it on here then or ask Lizzie to do it.

Posted by: momac (9156)  Report abuse
Marie..I can't trouble her again.

Posted by: MarieM (5094) Report abuse

Mac I can't believe I've never seen this guy before but I have led a sheltered life pop musically speaking. On one of the you tube clips he does 'Mr Blue Sky'. this is just a cover is it or was he in ELO?

Try this one Momac.....I watched this one as it wouldn't play on my iPad either...........I think your paintings of Maria are very beautiful......

Posted by: momac (9156)  Report abuse
Thank you for that Lizzie..it's a beautiful song..for some reason that song always makes me feel emotional, but I'll probably be singing it all night now..and thank you for your kind comments on my paintings.

Ray, John Miles wasn't in ELO, it was a cover, but a hell of a good version.

Love the song lizzie
It was the title song of a film starring Lynn Redgrave.
They're singing live on stage & the harmonies are just great.

The best E.L.O. track in my very humble opinion...

Posted by: raymyjamie (5260) Report abuse
I like this one

Mr Blue Sky

It was originally released on vinyl & at the end of the song I seem to remember that there is a distorted voice telling you 'Please turn me over'

Posted by: lizziedownunder (6330)  Report abuse
Well I liked it Ray......it is a bit old and was a bit "pocky" on my iPad but it passed because it was ELO....

Posted by: lizziedownunder (6330)  Report abuse
If you want something to watch while you listen to your music on your tablet or laptop or desk top try the "ANEMONE" app. It is awesome IMHO.......

Lizzie... they were only around in the late 80's, did the one album and then vanished into obscurity. If you could drop me an email I will point you in the right direction to get the album... it will not cost you anything.

Thanks Lizzie, For my seventieth my friends (Margaret, Mavis and Anne) treated me to a day out in Blackpool, meal etc. The highlight being the daily recital. I am sure something was said as I was ushered to the front first balcony where all four of us hung over as far as possible. Every now and again Phil Kelsall would look up and give a wink.
