shoplifting

I always thought to be detained for shoplifting you had to have left the premises. Now on the news more and more people are being detained whilst still on the premises. I am asking this because when I am out shopping with my wife if we only require a few items (she cannot have a basket on her lap)I normally put a bag across the handles of the wheelchair and put the items in that, then empty the bag at the till. Could we get pulled for an alleged shoplifting offence

I don't know but personally i wouldn't put anything inside my own bag while inside the shop. It's only your world then that you intended to get the things out at the till. Can you not hang the basket on the handle?
