would love to see Rangi at half back at Wigan though

It's got to be Sam Tomkins
He's the only player to score a try whilst unconscious

He deserves it,TOM.
Credit were it's due.
Come on Rangi, anything else would be a disgrace.

Rangi Chase has been so inspirational this season, his team(do you know who he plays for Jade?)have not even got through to the play-offs
Replied: 26th Sep 2011 at 20:30
having the best attack and defence, topping the table too
i think someone from warrindton should get it.

Is that why Scott Parker won an award for West Ham this year, football writers player of the year.
If you thought a bit Rita,it may stop you appearing such a p****.

Even more disgraceful that a Wiganer will not support a player from his home town club.
But that's a Latic's supporter for you.

Any one of the 3 would be deserved winners. I do not know when the winner is picked, but it would be nice if it was after the Grand final.

I hate to say it but Roby would get my vote. He's been brilliant in a Saints side badly hit by injuries, and nowhere to call home.
He's the one Wigan need to fear on Saturday night.
Replied: 29th Sep 2011 at 23:36

A really good player, but it beats me how he got the vote the other year, after only playing half a season, and again this term
Replied: 30th Sep 2011 at 06:53
Michael Monaghan of Warrington should have been in the short list and also the dream team before Roby as he has been outstanding all season and not just half a season.
The last time Roby won it, it was a wrong selection and resulted in a change in the voting system with fellow players now selecting the winner instead of newspaper reporters.
Replied: 30th Sep 2011 at 08:42
I'd go for Sam all the way. He gets cheap shots week in and week out but never takes a backwards step unless it's to go round someone. I wouldn't argue if one of the others win it though as they are both great players.

Anyway back on track after the infantile postings
..........Rangi is ‘English’!!!!!!
Rangi Chase has been called up into the England ‘train-on' squad ahead of the 2011 Four Nations
Although born in New Zealand he has never played for the country of his birth and qualifies to play for England on residency grounds!
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 12:37
wigvet
Why do we need to select any foreign born players when we have all these find young players coming through our academies.
The way Mcnamara is going on, he might as well ignore our own lads and just include the foreign born players.
As for Rangi Chase, how long has he been resident here?
International selection has become a farce.
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 17:30
I agree with Ruddy. You should only be allowed to play for the country that you draw your first breath in. Just as an aside I think that James Roby will be crowned Man of Steel later today. Not saying he should be but get a gut feeling that players from Wigan don't get the votes they should from their fellow pros. Jealousy maybe or a dislike of Wigan Rugby. Hope I am wrong.
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 18:01
'players from Wigan don't get the votes they should from their fellow pros'
remind me..... who won it last year?
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 20:24
Remind me about when Trent Barrett was a long odds on favourite and didn't win it.
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 20:27
New Zealand and Australia have always had a large proportion of players who were not born in their countries, and if the criteria is changed to the breath rule for selection I am sure teams would be picked to play, but I am not convinced about the quality it would provide!
I watched the England v Exiles match at Headingley and Chase was outstanding, while young Tomkins had a very difficult night, two really skilful players but I am sure Sam will get there some time!
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 20:59

The only difficulty he had in that game was with the idiot element of Leeds supporters who found some warped pleasure in booing a member of their own International team.
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 21:14
Ruddy,
Not really ,the Exiles kicked to the corner and battered him!
Leeds supporters near me were garbage, and I will be hoping the Lancashire team win at OT this weekend

Used to have a great deal of respect for the Leeds club and it's supporters but now gone after their treatment of Sam Tomkins.
Prior to Tomkins, it was James Graham when St Helens were better then Wigan a couple of seasons ago.

Broady - 'Remind me about when Trent Barrett was a long odds on favourite and didn't win it'
I will; that was 2007 - when it was voted for by the PRESS
thereafter it is voted for by the players
'players from Wigan don't get the votes they should from their fellow pros'
remind me AGAIN..... who won it last year?
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 21:32
Obviously I don't watch much Rugby these days but from what I read Sam Tomkins isn't universally admired by both fans of other clubs and his fellow Professionals. Hence the reason I don't think he will win the award. The same thing could never be said against Pat Richards who won the award last year.

award announced at 11.30pm
by the way Rangi Chase 'qualifies' to play for England because he has lived here a mere three years
Incredible!
Replied: 3rd Oct 2011 at 22:03
As I said earlier you should only be allowed to play for the country that you drew your first breath in. What about the Stand Offs who have played their way through Junior Rugby etc and one will be thrown aside to make way for a guy who has lived in the country three years.

And I am curious but when was the last time an English coach won the coaches award?

Dean Bell and I think the English coach to win the coaches award was Brian Noble in 2003.
and as I did not google, so I stand corrected!

Do you think that Rangi Chase winning the Albert Goldthorpe Medal in the League Express had a influence on the way players voted?
Replied: 5th Oct 2011 at 08:29
Did not know about that Ruddy
But the greatest accolade for any player must be to win an individual award voted for by your fellow players
One wonders why did they not vote for Sam who for me is the greatest talent around but has been somewhat subdued sine Wembley
Replied: 5th Oct 2011 at 09:30
Rangi probably won it because his new coach is the great Ian Millward
Replied: 5th Oct 2011 at 11:47

are you going to the Leigh meeting tonight?
