Yes, we rented a television from Telebank in the early
1970s. Those were the days eh?? A gentleman would come every month (I think it was) and empty it. Even have a cup of tea with us !!!!

Might've had the name of the shop wrong, I was thinking of a place in Dingle Road, Upholland.

They probably had a shop in Wigan as well Dave, it's just that living in Westhoughton, Bolton was 'just up the road'

Just realised Audrey, read another of your post where you mentioned Lee Bank in Westhoughton, I should've guessed it might be Bolton. Lee Bank eh, a friend of mine lived there, not seen him for years.

I lived there from 1965 to 1987. Perhaps I might know
him/her. Are we allowed to name names on here or would
it be too intrusive ?

It would be intrusive, to name names Audrey on a public forum......but I'm sure you'll know who it is.

The shop in Dingle Road was 'Telehire'.

I worked for Telebank in 1974/75, my area was Liverpool, the office was on Kirkby industrial estate. At that time the Wigan area came under the Bolton office. Telebank didn't have 'shops' as such, they got their business from local newspaper ads.

The idea was that customers would build up an account paying through the meter. This would pay the rental and any money left over could be used to buy household goods.

Some 'customers' didn't have enough in the meter for the rental, they would use washers instead of coins and in one area they used to cut lino into circles and use them. Others just broke into the meters, I suppose it was the same with gas and electric.

ah yes, i remember them well.
we had unlimited viewing fer the same two an six pence.a screw driver did the trick, just pop the same half crown in and take it out and so on so forth. how did they ever make it pay.
have to say, these days i am a pillar in the community of total cash in hand honesty.

Yes bambam, there were some rough areas, especially the tenement blocks round Liverpool. Things don't change, even in the roughest places there were some really nice people.

Once darkness fell you had to watch your back when people knew you were carrying money. Several collectors were 'done over', I was a lucky one I guess.

I'm trying to re-call the tv shop on Dingle Road, Upholland, the name Gallagher springs to mind, and a possible connection to Wigan Little Theatre.
