Your right about my dad being auny jinnys favourite mark, after maggie died he had to fone her in the evening to say good night, if he forgot, she'd fone him. We used to go see her at the convent in later years, the nuns were fanntastic.
What is really strange is when my nana was dying, someone from up the street asked her daughter is she was seriosuly ill as she'd seen that the sisters were home that morning and sat in the window. Both maggie and jinny had already died a few years previous.
My dad was a bit of a 'hard man' for years, but he said as a kid he was probably the fastest runner cos he was not a scrapper. My older brother is also a member in here he goes by the name of franny.I have some old pics somewhere of the nuns when they were young girls, they were lovely ladies, jinny strict as hell maggie was full of fun.......nuns or not they never refused a drink though!Used to reply it'd be rude to refuse!

Hi Mark its Michael who had the caliper, but I think Rob was ill as a kid as he is a diabetic. Rob has never aged, I look older than him and he is my uncle!!Maureen was about 17 when she got married, her husband Brian died earlier this year.
We lived in Bryn for over 20 years.
My nan stayed at Riding Lane till she died 6 years ago at 87, she was a tough lady too.Apparently when my dad was born he was one of biggest babies in the area, she had knitted small pink clothes , he was a boy and HUGE.My nan was still trying to make him wear a scarf and balaclava when he was in his his 40's!!!
She'd never ask us to pop in, she'd summon us, and we never dared say no, franny used to sweeten her with a bottle of whisky.

You know summat Mark she once told me there was no vehicle she couldn't and hadn't driven while in Africa.Everything from a mini to a HGV, she drove anything to get stuff transpotred, I got a lot of pics stashed somewhere of her working in Kenya, she did a lot out there opening schools and orphanages in particular, she even got to met the pope .She had a massive knowledge of politics , she should have written a book. She stuck it out all through amins reign, no news came out of Africa from her or about her for years , she was nursing on a leper colony during his reign of terror. They couldn't even persuade her to come home to uk when she was seriously ill with malaria. Fantastic lady was Jinny.
Franny was tracing family tree a few years back, she was cagey at first about giving details cos of a few skeltons in the closet for such a strict catholic family, then she called her mum a loose woman!?! Apparently she was pregnant before she married.....that was the awful skeleton she was worried about.I only ever saw her without a habit once, she had hair that was right down her back, but even when their 'uniforum' was relaxed she didn't relax it. Aunt maggie did, and was told off by her hahahaha

Had a few bike rides recently down Crankwood, it must be about 30 or so years since I had been down there.

Also rode down Park Lane to Bickershaw pit. It is much bigger area than I thought, it was like the surface of the moon. There's talk of doing it all up now, new houses nature area and golf club. Even though I liked the deserted feel of the place it would be better used for the above as long as they don't build too many houses or yet another industrial estate.

I only went down Crankwood when Cliff was off, then Fisher Ave was on that round, i used to go up Park Lane to the Avenue then up to the top of Maypole cut through were they used to do the coal screening into Crankwood rd and finish at those houses near the swing bridge in Plank lane There were John Greehalch, Tommy Charnock, Cliff Ainsworth and myself worked for Tommy Farrimond then and nobody wanted that round but Cliff loved it.

hi mark,
Iremember the path you're on about from Park Lane to B ickershaw. It's just about passable ,last time we were down there. The problem being that the landowners are making it very difficult for walkers.
last Sunday my hubby took the dog out over the fields ,behind the ''apple & pear, going towards Bickie
at the old level crossing he had to turn away from there as what used to be the crossing had been filled with slurry, which the dog wadded into and got stuck,he had to helpher out and she came home stinking worse than the sewerage.

The path I mean goes straight down Park Lane past the new houses being built and then through a horse riding place. It carries on through a few fields and then
come to a stop at the border of the colliery. You can get in to the old collliery there .It's not a stile exactly but there is gap that has been made to go through.

HI MARK,
I know the path you meant it in fact crosses the same railway line and was the next level crossing up. Last time I was ROUND THERE IT WAS PASSABLE WITH DIFFICULTY -ITS LIKE A QUAGMIRE.

hi mark,
Yuo're right -Nucky Bridge had the far next to the apple and pear.
In the 50's I was living in Bickershaw nd my dad worked at the Maypole. He used to bike it to work through the fields, past Taylors farm and under the tunnel, past the apple & pear and Nucky.s farm.
One day he came home with a beautiful puppie off Nuckys bitch-this bitch Nucky had saved from drowning in the canal some years before.
My dad alsoused to keep pidgeons and I used to often go with him to fly the pidgeons over the fields around Bickershaw and Abram and I used to know those fields like the back of my hand.
