Is Pemberton part of Wigan ?

No, it's not part of Wigan, but it's part of the same 'borough'. It's not part of Manchester either, but is part of the same county.

My cousin's great grandsfather was manager of a Cotton mill . His address in 1901 is Pemberton . She was told that when he died all the mills in town closed so that people could watch his funeral procession .
I don't know where the mill was or when the funeral was , but if the facts are correct , there must be something in a local paper .
He was John Sharples and he was 71 in 1901 . He had been born in Haslingden , where all the family were "reed makers"
Can you suggest which newspaper I should be looking for ?

Are there any Sharples descendants in Wigan still ? John's son , Joseph , was a mill manager as well . He lived next door to his father at 204 and 206 Ormskirk Rd . He had children Edward and Olive . I'm wondering whether Edward died in WW1 .
Thank you
Linden

I've just discovered James Sharples on 248 Ormskirk Rd (another son of John ). His daughter Violet married John Gill in 1914 and had a daughter , Ellen .
His son Victor married Christina Anderson in 1919 .
And there was a daughter , Izley
