In search of VITALI

Started by: cmooney (14)

I am trying to trace my family history and have come to a standstill. I have found out that my great granfather emigrated to Wigan from Italy but I don't know why how or when. His name is Emmanuel VITALI and he lived in Newtown. He is listed in the 1891 Census as a Fine Art Dealer with country of origin Italy. He married a lady from Wrightington by the name of Alice in 1885. He would have been 24years old at this time. Is there anyone who can advise me how to find out when he arrived in England and from where in Italy he may have come from? I am curious as to why anyone would move from Italy to Wigan - as lovely as Wigan is. My imagination is running wild with possibilities such as he stole a piece of valuable art and was on the run!
Hopefully someone can help.

Give the History Shop a try. Tell them what you are looking for and they will point you in the right direction. They have records (upstairs in the building) for all kinds of things. If it is a busy time I think you have to make an appointment to look through files. Hope you have some success.

There are two entries on the 2005 electoral roll for Vitali, both living on the northern side of Wigan. Both female.
There is one other entry for the north west, in Prestwich in Manchester.

I do appreciate suggestions made by everyone. Thank you. I have the census details already from 1891. That was easy to find. What I really want to know is where in Italy Emmanuel came from and when he went to Wigan. Did he go as an adult or with his family as a young child?? This information I can't find from the census. I have a contact in Rome who is persuing some avenues. I will get around to trying some of the suggestions made during the school holidays when I have a bit of time up my sleeve. Thanks again to everyone.

Whilst researching in the History Shop, Wigan, today, I came across the following:
WIGAN OBSERVER: 11 May 1918.
"Wigan Italian's son wounded":
Mr. Emanuel Vitali, who is well-known in Wigan, has received information that his son, Oswald, who was erroneously reported as "died of wounds", is at present a patient in Prestwich (Military) Hospital suffering from a shrapnel injury in the leg. Vitali was educated at St. Cuthbert's School, Pemberton, and worked in the Post Office at Upholland. He enlisted in the Dragoon Guards and has seen 3 years service. Mr. Vitali's 3 other sons are fighting for King and Country." There is a photo of Oswald included.

Heritagelass. if ever you come across any information on a William Fergus O'conner (not always using the O Conner) serving in the N'land Fuseliers in Ireland in 1880-85 and died there through drowning in the Portobella Basin , Grand Canal . on second of February 1885 I have his death Certificate from the Dublin Coroner but they seem very unwilling to tell me if they rescued him and where he is buried --or was he just left there , I have sent numerous letters to Ireland search cemetarys contacted the Wigan cemetaries and --nothing so if by chance anyone sees anything please let me know I would be eternally grateful , sorry to intrude on the thread

Met him via Johnny Kay in the 80's and then later on at Trencherfield when he was working as a graphic designer for the metro! Thanks

Just been reading through the book 'Living and Working in Wigan (Listing Wigan Photographers 1850-1925)'
by John Hannavy & Chris Ryan.

Page 62 lists Emmanuele Vitali, 41 Wallgate, Wigan.
Evidently photographers also did other work (one was a confectioner as well!) and since Emmanuele was a picture framer & carver on the 1891 census it would seem logical.

Hello again,

Your grandfather, Oswald, is named on the beautiful illuminated WW1 Roll of Honour for all those employees around Wigan district who served and died.
If you get to Wigan, you might like to arrange to see it.
It continues to be respectfully cared for for by the post office authorities in Wigan.
